Cap Cana or Bávaro: where to stay in Punta Cana?

When planning a trip to Punta Cana, the first big question is where to stay. The two most popular areas are Bávaro and Cap Cana. They are only minutes apart, but they offer very different vacations. As a local team managing apartments and villas in both, here are the real differences.
Bávaro: a long beach, lively and everything nearby
Bávaro is Punta Cana's main tourist area. It has a long white-sand beach with turquoise water, surrounded by restaurants, supermarkets, shops, bars and most of the excursions. It is about 15 to 30 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), depending on the exact spot.
Inside Bávaro, Los Corales and El Cortecito are walkable areas with beachfront restaurants, beach bars and boat tours. Ideal if you like dining out, beach walks and having things to do nearby.
Bávaro is for you if:
- You want to walk to the beach, restaurants and supermarkets.
- You travel as a couple, with friends or with family and want plenty of options.
- You are looking for good value.
Our apartments at Playa Coral, right in Bávaro, are beachfront or steps from the sand, with pools and a gym. For example, the 3-bedroom D12 apartment or H41, next to Jellyfish restaurant. We also have Ocean Bay F302 in Los Corales.
Cap Cana: exclusive, quiet, with a marina
Cap Cana is a private, gated community in the south of Punta Cana, with controlled access, championship golf courses such as Punta Espada, a large marina and luxury residences. It is also about 15 to 25 minutes from the airport.
Its main beach, Juanillo Beach, has calm, shallow water that is great for kids, and usually gets less sargassum than Bávaro thanks to the reef. On the other hand, it is less walkable: to reach restaurants outside Cap Cana you usually need a car or taxi.
Cap Cana is for you if:
- You want privacy, security and a quiet setting.
- You play golf or want to go boating from the marina.
- You travel as a large group or family and want a villa with a private pool.
In Cap Cana we have a 3-bedroom apartment at Azzure with pool, jacuzzi and BBQ, and Villa Agapi, 8 bedrooms, with a private pool and ocean and golf views.
Quick comparison
| Bávaro | Cap Cana | |
|---|---|---|
| Vibe | Lively, touristy | Private and quiet |

| Restaurants and shops | Many, walkable | Inside the community or by car |
| Best for | Couples, friends, families | Families, groups, golf and boating |

What about Punta Cana Resort & Club?
There is a third, very exclusive option: Punta Cana Resort & Club, next to the airport, home to Tortuga Bay and the Indigenous Eyes ecological reserve. That is where our 5-bedroom Villa Paradiso is, with a pool, golf-course views and staff included.
